Graphics cards : Explained | How GPU works?

Most of enjoy playing games in our mobile phones and personal computers, and we have often heard we need a Graphics Card if we want to enjoy a game consistently in high quality.
So what is Graphics Card and how does it works?







Whichever device we use, a PC or Mobile Phone, in its display there are multiple pixels. Today, the most basic screen of 720p contains 1 million pixels or if we talk about 4K, it contains 8 million pixels.

Now what has to be shown on those number of pixels after which you enjoy the video or the video game or an image, all of these tasks is regulated by the Graphics card of that device.

Today it is common, attaching the Graphics Card externally but earlier it was the part of the Motherboard. Now comes Intel and AMD , where we say about integrated GPU which means in your processor there is a separate unit known as the Graphics Unit, which handles all the functions of graphics and instructs the monitor that at which pixel which image has to shown.

If we talk about moving content, it takes place 60 times per second, that means even the 1 million pixel of the 720p screen has to be processed and refreshed 60 times a second.

The Graphics card has its Motherboard, RAM, and a processor which is known as GPU(Graphics Processing Unit). It has its own speed and capacity depending on the size of the Graphics card like 2 GB, 4 GB, 6 GB and others.









This whole combination of Graphics Card is attached to the motherboard through a PCI or PCI-E slot and then it gets signal from the processor that what has to be shown on the screen and the rest processing is done by the Graphics Card.

Suppose, there is a student in class who knows only multiplication but nothing else, and if you ask the student to do other operations, he/she is unable but can do multiplication of number at a great speed.

Similarly, is the difference between GPU and CPU. CPU can do multiple tasks and operations but the GPU is expert in matters and functions of Graphics.

The GPU divides the screen into polygons and fills it with the part of images, then different colours and shades is filled in the pixels and at the end a complete 3D image is available on the screen.
Whole of this processing is done by the Graphics Card and then the output is sent to the Monitor.

Sometimes the Graphics Card is not able to draw enough power from the motherboard so it is individually connected to the power source.

In mobile phones, in the SOC (System on Chip) the GPU and CPU are next to each other, and the work of GPU is same, that is processing of Graphics.

If you've noticed, while you are playing a game in your device and the image is being build as you move further because the GPU of that device is not able to cope up with the processing of the game but a good GPU is always ready to do all the Graphics processes that is required.

Different companies are working on their system of developing of GPUs, to give better and quality user experience, so that their Graphics Card is able to cope up with every video game and video possible.
